Playful Kiss Drama Review
Oh Ha Ni(Jung So Min) is a stupid high school student. No seriously, she's very dumb. The bottom of her class an in love with the school's most popular, top of the class, genius Baek Seung Jo (Kim Hyun Joong). One day she writes him a note confessing her undying love for him. He promptly returns it after he's corrected all of her grammatical mistakes and given her a D-. Not too long after this incident her house collapses in an earthquake forcing she and her father go to live with her father's childhood friend who happens to be the father of Baek Seung Jo. With the help of Seung Jo's eager mother, played by Jung Hye Young, Ha Ni attempts to make Seung jo Like her. The two enter the same University and her quest for his love continues until she vows to give up on him and then turns her attention to high school friend Bong Joon Gu(Lee Tae Sung), which of whom has been in love with her forever and a day. When Ha Ni decides to give up Seung Jo, he realizes that he likes having her follow after him like a puppy and that maybe he actually is in love with her too.
This drama really doesn't have a plot, but that's alright cause it was cute. The characters were fun and that was enough to mostly carry the story. Kim Hyun Joong almost mastered the full range of human emotions in this drama, a much needed improvement over Boys Before Flowers. Though his character didn't have a whole lot of depth or emotion every once in a while he gives this smile and you totally forgive him for not being a great actor. Oh Han Ni's character really was the best in the drama, though she frustrates you a good portion of her screen time. She's stupid, and she knows it but she never gives up once she puts her mind to something. Seugn Jo's mother is hilarious, she's like a teenage girl on steroids.
Rating: 7/10
Memorable Moment:
In Episode 13 Ha Ni has finally decided to give up Baek Seung Jo. She goes on a date with Joon Gu and decides that she's going to like him instead cause he's nice to her. After a slight misunderstanding between the two she runs out into the rain and eventually runs in to Baek Seung Jo who has not been waiting for her, no of course not. He offers her an umbrella and tells her he knew she'd be too stupid to bring an umbrella. Ha Ni is completely worn out by his spiteful comments and choses to remain silent.
As they're walking Seung Jo eventually brings up the topic of her new 'boyfriend' and if she really does like Joon Gu. She gives an irritated confirmation and Seung Jo wonders if she's just going to like whoever likes her back. She's sick of the one-sided love and tells him "I like Joon Gu!" Seung Jo fires back no, "You like me." As she storms off he follows her declaring that she can't like anyone but him. By this point she's so frustrated at him she exclaims that she does still like him but what good does it do her cause he doesn't like her back. He treats her like trash-
Seung Jo drops the umbrella and pulls her in for a kiss. When he releases her he informs her that she can't like anyone but him from now on. She muses that this is their second kiss and he hugs her while saying, "It's the third," but, "it's okay, you don't have to count anymore."
The next episode starts the same way the previous episode ended: Ha Ni and Seung Jo are standing in the rain and them they go back to his parent's house. When they walk in his younger brother tells him that Oh Ha Ni is moving out and her father confirms it. Seung Jo response by grabbing Ha Ni's hand and threading his fingers through hers. The look she gives him is priceless, it's like, "What the heck are you doing?" then she has to look down at their entwined hands to confirm that he's really holding onto her hand. Kind of funny.
And then he plainly states that he wants to marry Oh Ha Ni. This makes everyone gasp in shock and Ha Ni's eyes get even wider, if that's even possible. Seung Jo asks if he can be allowed to marry Ha Ni. Her father doesn't believe him and has to ask if he's serious. "Yes," This then makes a hilarious scene as he tells Seung Jo that Ha Ni isn't good at anything, though Seung Jo already knows this he feels the need to point it out. HA! And Seung Jo nods "I know," She isn't bright, "I know," She can't cook, "I know it well," *snicker* She's careless and accident prone. "(I know it)The best," Each time Seung Jo responds he ends with a smile cause he knows she's terrible at everything and it seems to make him kind of happy. All the while poor Ha Ni is in the background slowly getting more and more distraught as she mouths 'Ap-ba', trying to silently beg her father to stop pointing out her faults. Poor girl. Finally her father tells Seung Jo that while she isn't smart, she's bright and will always do the right thing. She even has a cute side to her. "Yes, I know it very well." Her father gives his content and this prompts Seung Jo's mother to start screaming in joy and jumping all over the place asking Seung Jo why he's so cool. Which is funny because earlier in episode 13 she told him how uncool he was. Everyone is smiling and happy, except his little brother who gives us a sigh with a face that says, "Well crap." as he states that he knew it was going to be like this. And as Seung Jo watches his mom hug Ha Ni he gives us one of those beautiful, but rare, Kim Hyun Joong smiles.
This is a cute couple of scenes cause Seung Jo, finally, admits his true feelings for Ha Ni; she in turn, finally, gets the man she's in love with and then her father starts pointing out everything that's wrong with her and all the reasons why someone wouldn't want to marry her. Poor girl. But it all turns out nice in the end. Cute scene. Pretty good kiss too.
